Cornwall Law Society Treasurer Appointed to The Law Society’s Advisory Committee for Small Firms

Cornwall Law Society is pleased to highlight the recent work of Verona Cocks, our Honorary Secretary and Treasurer and a past President of the Society, who continues to champion the interests of small and medium-sized law firms and represent the concerns of the legal profession at a national level.

Last week, Verona travelled to London to attend The Law Society’s Annual General Meeting, where important issues affecting the future of the legal profession were discussed.

One of the key concerns raised was the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s (SRA) proposed regulatory changes affecting individuals with unilateral management control of law firms, including owners and managers, who also act as their firm’s Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) and/or Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration (COFA) when specified financial thresholds are exceeded.

These proposals have raised significant concerns about the potential impact on small and medium-sized practices, with fears that as many as 1,600 firms could face closure. Such an outcome could have serious consequences for solicitors, their employees and the communities that rely on these firms for accessible legal services.

The SME & Boutique Law Firm Alliance, established by Jade Gani and others, has played an important role in bringing the profession together to raise awareness of these concerns. Through an open letter to the SRA, solicitors and firms have highlighted the potential implications for access to justice and the long-term sustainability of independent legal practices.

Verona described the AGM as particularly inspiring, with lawyers from across the country coming together to voice their concerns and advocate for the interests of smaller firms.

A New Appointment Supporting Small Firms

Alongside her ongoing role with Cornwall Law Society, Verona has recently been appointed to The Law Society’s Advisory Committee for Small Firms.

This appointment provides an opportunity for her to contribute to discussions about the challenges facing smaller legal practices and help ensure their perspectives are represented in decisions affecting the future of the profession.

Verona also highlighted concerns surrounding government proposals relating to interest earned on client accounts, which could have financial implications for both law firms and their clients.

Following the AGM, she travelled to Birmingham to attend the Local Law Societies’ autumn lunch, joining representatives from across the country to share experiences, strengthen professional connections and discuss matters affecting local law societies.

Championing the Future of the Legal Profession

Small and medium-sized law firms play a vital role in providing legal services, supporting local economies and maintaining access to justice within their communities. Ensuring their voices are heard is particularly important when regulatory and financial changes are being considered.

Cornwall Law Society congratulates Verona on her appointment to The Law Society’s Advisory Committee for Small Firms and thanks her for her continued dedication to the profession and her commitment to representing the interests of local legal practices.

Her work highlights the importance of collaboration, strong representation and constructive engagement in helping to shape the future of legal services.
