President's Statement

Pam Dosanjh-Phillips

President of Cornwall Law Society 2024-2025

I am honoured to be President of Cornwall Law Society and excited for the year ahead. I aim to build upon the amazing work and achievements of Kirsty Davey, past presidents, and the dedicated committee members.

My aim for the forthcoming year is to continue our work on engagement: greater engagement with you, the members and widening the scope of that engagement facilitating broader diversity. Promoting wellbeing and looking at the issues we face as a profession, such as more diversity, recruitment and climate change.  I will continue our work with the universities and colleges in the County, in particular Truro & Penwith and Penryn campus of Exeter University to ensure support for the next generation, as well as increasing the breadth of training that the society offers, to include topics such as time and stress management.

This year’s calendar is already filling up with a variety training opportunities and social events, and we are delighted to be welcoming the President of the Law Society on 12 March 2025, I will be hosting the annual president’s dinner and legal awards on 13 June 2025 at the beautiful Truro Cathedral, which will give us an opportunity to connect, inspire the next generation and take a moment to reflect on our achievements.

As for my background, I am an Employment solicitor at DPH Legal Solicitors, providing legal advice to both local and national clients. I was born in the Midlands and attended university locally before starting my training contract in Leicester, qualifying in 2003. Since then, I have worked in both private and public sector, as a locum and consultant solicitor giving me a breadth of experience and an understanding of the changing landscape of the profession. In February 2013, I took the opportunity to relocate for a role with Cornwall Council.  I eventually decided to make Cornwall my forever home after meeting my Cornish husband.

I am passionate about diversity and community and aim to give back in my roles with the Employment Lawyers Association’s Race Equality Committee and as trustee of Cornwall Pride.

Our History

The Society was formed in 1883 and its first President was Henry Sewell Stokes from Bodmin.

The present constitution was adopted in 1920 and amongst its Objects it cites: “The upholding of the character and status of the Solicitors practising within the County of Cornwall or within 14 miles thereof. The promotion of honourable professional practise. The suppression of malpractice. The settlement of points of practise. The decision of questions of professional welfare, usage, or of courtesy.”

Though the language may be a little archaic, we believe that the sentiments expressed are just as valid today as they were 100 years ago.
